On 22 March’s episode of Jy het ’n Wenresep! on VIA (DStv channel 147) traditional date fingers rose above the rest of the dishes. Stuart Wilkins from Gousblomkloof tried to impress Huisgenoot’s Carmen Niehaus with his lamb rack while Helen Lee from Fish Hoek made chicken curry which she learned to make while in Thailand. But it was Marilize du Toit from Strand who impressed Carmen with her traditional date finger recipe.

Chocolate date fingers

In this recipe the dates are soaked in Carmien Tea’s Orange Choc rooibos tea.

Makes 8 – 12 fingers or 20 balls

Preparation: 20 minutes

250 ml (1 c) dates, chopped

About 80 ml (1/3 c) water or orange choc rooibos tea

250 ml (1 c) flaked almonds

90 ml (6 tbs) cocoa

90 ml (6 tbs) coconut flakes

30 ml (2 tbs) honey

Pinch of salt

Extra almond flakes or coconut flakes for on top

1Soak the dates in the water or rooibos tea until soft.

2Place in a food processor until smooth.

3Add the almonds, cocoa, coconut, honey and salt into the food processor until it forms a dough.

4Choose whether you want to press the batter into a pan, let it cool and cut into bars or you can roll the batter into balls.

5Keep in the refrigerator to keep it fresh and firm.
