Edible Paint

Welcome to our very first Pinteresting adventure!
I have wanted to do a fun painting activity with M for a long time but it was still to chilly. So as soon as the sun peeked out from her winter sleep and created enough warmth for us to paint we were out and about.

I researched through a lot of edible paint recipes and will show you few different options. The first I tried is made from Corn Flour and cooked on a stove top. It has quite a bit of sugar in it, but please remember that baby does not eat the entire batch (please don’t let baby eat the entire batch!) so a little taste here and there would be okay. If you do not like the sugar I will be posting more recipes in the near future for you to pick and choose from.

So here we go:

Recipe:

1/2 Cup of Corn Flour
2 cups of COLD water (it must be cold water)
3 tbsp of sugar

What do I need?

Whisk
Measuring cups
Measuring Spoons
Spoon
Pot
Jars

Step 1:

Add all the ingredients to the pot. I doubled up on this recipe to create the amount used in today’s post.

Step 2:

Cook over low heat until mixture becomes thick. It will take a while to thicken but once it starts thickening it goes very fast and within a couple of minutes (+- 1-2 min) your paint will be ready.

[av_textblock size=” font_color=” color=”]

Step 3:

Add the coloring. I scooped out enough for each jar and then added coloring to each batch.

Step 4:

Create a outside area where your little ones can paint. I used a plastic table cloth and stuck rows of paper to it with sellotape. I think Butcher’s paper will work better if you have any. I used rocks to keep the table cloth down as it was a windy day.
The mixture thickens as it cools down so use as soon as possible. As you can see from the pictures that our mixture has become very thick so I scooped it all over the paper for tem to paint with.

[av_textblock size=” font_color=” color=”]

Step 5:

Have fun! Remeber to put on old clothes.

Please note that this is a very messy activity and you should have a exit plan (how to clean and wash baby after all the fun!). I first wiped M down with some kitchen towels and then rinsed her under the shower before taking a bath.

Tips and Tricks:

  1. Use paint as quickly as possible after is has cooled down.
  2. To add texture for sensory purposes you can use rice or as we did sprinkles to add color.
  3. Once the mixture is on the stove top keep stirring over a low heat. The stirring will prevent the mixtre from burning or forming clots.
  4. It will be messy. Prepare for the mess so that you can enjoy the activity wuth your little one.
