Learn how to crochet – a beginners guide by Julme Conradie

Hi. I’m Julme, wife, mother, and self-confessed craft addict.

It was my mother who first taught me the value of creativity and how creating can enrich one’s life. I can’t remember how old I was when I first learned to crochet, but I do remember trying endless times to make something.
This time of year, with the cooler weather, my favourite craft is definitely crocheting.
I’m constantly working on a few creative projects at once, and have to remind myself not to get completely lost in all the crafting.
In the next few weeks I will share a few ideas on how to take a simple (totally beginner friendly) crochet pattern and make something unique and special for yourself or someone else. We will be crocheting the cute hat I’m wearing in the picture, that can easily be made in any size.

What will you need:

You will need to get a ball of yarn and compatible crochet hook – any yarn weight (referring to the thickness) will do.

I used a nice chunky yarn with a 5,5mm crochet hook.

To get started – if you’re a complete beginner and new to this wonderful art, called crochet, please look at some instructions on how to make the following stitches:

Slip Knot (Sl st),

Chain (Ch), as well as

Double Crochet (Dc).
