At Carmién, our roots run deeper than rooibos. They extend into the people and communities who form part of everyday life on the farm, throughout the year.

On Bergendal, a crèche, pre-school and aftercare facility has been part of farmworker families’ lives for generations. Established around 60 years ago by Jo van Zyl, the school was created to support farmworkers and their families, offering a safe and nurturing space for their children, while making it possible for both parents to work.

Today, that same purpose continues.

The school cares for children from birth to Grade RR, providing a structured environment where they can learn, play and grow while their parents work. For many families, this support is essential, offering peace of mind knowing their children are safe, cared for and able to enjoy their childhood.

As children grow older, this support continues through the aftercare facility, which is open to farmworkers’ children between the ages of 6 and 18. Here, learners receive assistance with homework, assignments and school projects, with access to computers and the internet to support their learning.

The crèche, pre-school and aftercare facility are free for the farmworkers’ children to attend. Each day, children receive breakfast, lunch and snacks, supporting both nourishment and development. Qualified Early Childhood Development teachers follow a structured programme and curriculum, ensuring consistent care and learning.

Throughout the year, a holiday programme is offered during every school break, helping children stay engaged, curious and active. The annual Christmas concert remains a highlight, creating special moments for families on the farm.

With around 30 children attending the crèche and pre-school, and approximately 90 learners in the aftercare facility, the initiative remains small in scale but meaningful in impact. It reflects a long-standing commitment to supporting the families who form part of Carmién’s story, not just during harvest, but every day.

As part of our broader approach to responsible farming and social equity, initiatives like this are not separate from what we do. They are part of it.

Because for Carmién, caring for the community is part of everyday life.
