Five minutes might not sound like much, but research suggests short breaks still count.
A 2022 review of research on short breaks looked at 22 study samples and found that micro-breaks of 10 minutes or less can help reduce fatigue and increase feeling energised. Interestingly, the research didnāt find that these short breaks improved overall task performance. In other words, taking five isnāt necessarily about getting more done. Sometimes, feeling a little less tired and more refreshed is benefit enough.
It also means the five minutes between meetings, before the school run or once the kitchen is finally quiet can still be worth taking.
Make Your Tea Break a Real Break
The trick is to make those few minutes feel like an actual break. Step away from what youāre doing, put down your phone and change your scenery if you can. Take a short walk, stretch or have a chat over a cuppa. It doesnāt need to take long, it just needs to give you a genuine pause before getting back to your day.
Thatās where making tea can be useful. Putting the kettle on, choosing your tea, letting it steep and sitting down to drink it gives your pause a natural beginning and end.
Your cup of tea doesnāt have to be the reason the pause works. Sometimes, it can simply be the reason you take one.
What Will You Pour?
What you reach for might depend on when youāre taking those five minutes.
Sometimes simple is exactly what you want. CarmiĆ©n Pure Organic Rooibos contains only organic rooibos and is naturally caffeine-free and sugar-free. Rooibos is also high in antioxidants, including polyphenols, and because thereās no caffeine to consider, it can fit into a tea break at any time of day.
For a more functional cup, our CarmiĆ©n Ashwagandha blend combines rooibos with ashwagandha, ginseng and ginger. Ashwagandha is an adaptogen, an ingredient traditionally used to help the body increase its resistance to stress over time. Ginseng is traditionally used to help fight fatigue, while ginger provides antioxidants and has anti-inflammatory properties. Together with a warming chai flavour, itās a great choice when you want a little more from your everyday cup.
Later in the day, our CarmiƩn Relax blend combines rooibos with chamomile, rosehip and hibiscus. Chamomile has been used traditionally for centuries for its calming properties and is commonly associated with relaxation and sleep.
Looking after your mental wellbeing is about more than taking a tea break, but giving yourself a few minutes to genuinely pause can still have value.
This World Mental Health Day, take five. Put the kettle on, make a cup you enjoy and give yourself a few minutes to actually drink it.
The rest can wait until the cup is empty.
