Every year on 21 May, tea lovers around the world celebrate International Tea Day. It is a day to appreciate the drinks that bring comfort to our mornings, warmth to our afternoons and calm to our evenings.

For South Africans, it is also a chance to celebrate something truly unique: Rooibos.

Grown only in the Cederberg region of the Western Cape, rooibos is one of the few teas in the world that can only come from one place. It is naturally caffeine-free, low in tannins and rich in antioxidants, with a smooth taste that never turns bitter.

South Africa’s Place in the Global Tea Story

Every tea-growing region has its own story to tell.

Japan has matcha. India has Darjeeling. China has oolong.

South Africa has rooibos.

Protected by Geographical Indication (GI) status, rooibos is recognised as a product of origin since 2021. Only rooibos grown in designated regions of South Africa can officially carry the name. That makes every cup a taste of a place found nowhere else in the world.

Why Rooibos Belongs in Every Tea Collection

A great tea collection offers more than variety. It gives you the right tea for every moment of the day.

Rooibos is one of the most versatile teas you can have in your tea collection. Naturally caffeine-free and low in tannins, it can be enjoyed in the morning, after meals or as a calming cup in the evening.

Its smooth, neutral flavour makes it the perfect base for a wide range of blends and pairs well with a variety of herbs, spices and functional ingredients, from soothing teas with chamomile like CarmiƩn Relax to functional wellness blends such as CarmiƩn Boost with vitamin C and zinc, and CarmiƩn Ashwagandha with ginseng and ginger.

Suitable for the whole family and easy to enjoy as is, with milk, honey or lemon, rooibos is the kind of tea you will reach for again and again. That is what makes it an essential part of any tea collection.

Rooted in Rooibos

At CarmiƩn Tea, rooibos is at the heart of everything we do. Our rooibos is grown, processed and packed at the farm, giving us full traceability from crop to cup.
